International Translation Day 2011

Dear Friends, Colleagues, and Partners,

Today, 30th September, is a great day for us translators around the world to feel unity and pride in our profession.

2011: Bridging Cultures
2010: Translation Quality for a Variety of Voices
2009: Working Together
2008: Terminology – Words matter
2007: Don’t shoot the messenger!
2006: Many Languages – One Profession
2005: Translation and Human Rights
2004: Translation, underpinning multilingualism and cultural diversity
2003: Translator’s Rights
2002: Translators as agents of social change

International Translation Day has been celebrated by the IFT (International Federation of Translators) since 1953 (!), with official recognition from 1991.

The theme for 2011 is Bridging Cultures… Anthony Burgess, the famous English author, once said: “Translation is not a matter of words only: it is a matter of making intelligible a whole culture”. It reminds us to be selective in the work we do and uphold the quality standards of our profession.

We wish you the very best in your business of bringing cultures closer to each other and opening up cultures for the benefit of all humankind.

Have a terrific weekend! Let’s celebrate!

With kind regards,
